Return to the wild
Elephant conservation in the wild landscapes of Kenya
A stay with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust offers something genuinely unusual: the opportunity to experience one of Africa's most respected elephant conservation programmes from within the landscapes where the elephants are being prepared for life back in the wild.
Stay privately in one of Sheldrick's Eco Lodges, explore the surrounding wilderness and spend time observing orphaned elephants at nearby Reintegration Units as they progress towards independence.
This isn't an elephant encounter created for tourism. Conservation comes first.

The journey back to the wild
Rescue is only the beginning.
Sheldrick's ultimate goal is to return orphaned elephants to a fully independent life in the wild. At its Reintegration Units, elephants gradually learn to navigate the wilderness, interact with wild herds and become less dependent on their Keepers.
Guests staying nearby have the rare opportunity to observe different stages of this process, from elephants emerging from their stockades in the morning to mud-bath visits and their return from the bush later in the day.
Former orphans sometimes return too, occasionally with calves of their own.
Observe, don't interfere
The experience is deliberately observational.
Guests don't walk with, feed or play with the elephants. Human interaction is kept to a minimum because the purpose of the programme is successful reintegration into the wild.
The privilege is being allowed to witness the work — not becoming part of the show.

Stay in the wilderness
Sheldrick's private Eco Lodges offer a very different way to experience Kenya.
Each property is reserved exclusively for one group, creating the freedom and privacy of your own home in the wilderness. The lodges are fully staffed, with resident chefs and teams looking after guests throughout their stay.

Ithumba
Set amongst the rocky hills of northern Tsavo East, it combines exceptional privacy and comfort with access to the nearby Ithumba Reintegration Unit.
For something more understated, Ithumba Camp offers a simpler, beautifully situated alternative in the same remarkable landscape.

Galdessa
Tsavo East
Set beside the Galana River, Galdessa offers a classic Tsavo wilderness experience with access to the elephants at the Voi Reintegration Unit.

Umani Springs
Kibwezi Forest
A completely different environment: lush forest, springs, extraordinary birdlife and wildlife, with the Umani Reintegration Unit nearby.
More than elephants
The elephants may bring you here, but the surrounding wilderness is an essential part of the experience.
Days can also include game drives through Tsavo, walks with Kenya Wildlife Service rangers, time along the Tiva River and simply experiencing the scale and solitude of one of Kenya's great wild landscapes.

Your stay supports the work
Sheldrick's Eco Lodges operate on a not-for-profit model, with proceeds supporting its conservation work across Tsavo.
Guests wishing to visit the Reintegration Units also foster an orphan, directly contributing to the long-term care of the animals in Sheldrick's programme.
So conservation isn't an optional activity attached to the holiday.
It's built into the reason these places exist.
