GRUMETI — TANZANIA

The Serengeti restored

A vast wilderness returned to life.

On the western edge of the Serengeti lies more than 350,000 acres of protected wilderness forming part of one of the world's great wildlife ecosystems.

The Grumeti Reserve was created to protect the route of the annual wildebeest migration and the biodiversity surrounding it. Today, the non-profit Grumeti Fund manages and protects the landscape, working alongside Singita to support its long-term future.

For travellers, the result is an extraordinary safari. But behind the wildlife lies an equally remarkable story of recovery.

A wilderness returned to life

When conservation work intensified in the early 2000s, Grumeti was under enormous pressure.

Illegal hunting, uncontrolled fires and invasive vegetation had contributed to severely depleted wildlife populations.

Over the following two decades, sustained protection, habitat management and scientific monitoring helped transform the landscape. Buffalo, wildebeest and elephant populations recovered dramatically, while anti-poaching teams now protect this vast ecosystem year-round.

The abundance you experience today is the result of years of work to bring a damaged ecosystem back.

The return of the black rhino

Returning eastern black rhino to the western Serengeti had been a long-term ambition of the Grumeti Fund.

In 2019, nine critically endangered eastern black rhinos were relocated from South Africa, establishing an important founding population and returning the species to a landscape from which it had largely disappeared.

Their protection and monitoring continues as part of Grumeti's wider conservation programme.

Experience the Serengeti differently

Grumeti is part of the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and sits directly on the route of the Great Migration. But with 350,000 acres of private reserve, the experience extends far beyond following the herds.

Game drives, guided walks, hot-air ballooning, birdwatching and opportunities to learn more about anti-poaching and community work offer different perspectives on the landscape. At Sasakwa, for example, guests can visit an anti-poaching observation post as part of their stay.

Stay in Grumeti

Singita offers several very different ways to experience Grumeti, allowing Primaterra to choose the property that best suits how you want to travel.

Sasakwa Lodge

Set high above the plains, Sasakwa combines sweeping Serengeti views with old-world grandeur and exceptional privacy.

Faru Faru Lodge

On the Grumeti River, Faru Faru is more relaxed and contemporary, overlooking a busy waterhole at the heart of the reserve.

Sabora Tented Camp

For a closer connection to the plains, Sabora brings the classic tented safari experience into the heart of Grumeti.

Private villas and exclusive-use options are also available for families and groups travelling together. Singita's current Grumeti collection includes Serengeti House, Milele, Kilima and Explore alongside the three properties above.

Purpose in motion

Certain journeys offer the opportunity to experience the landscape in a completely different way.

The Wagora Bike Ride is a five-day experience including a 150km ride across Grumeti, supporting the anti-poaching scouts who protect the reserve. Participants spend time with Grumeti Fund teams and learn about conservation and community projects along the way.

The annual Serengeti Girls Run takes women across the plains while raising funds for programmes supporting girls in rural Tanzania, combining running with time spent with local communities and Grumeti Fund teams.

These aren't safari activities created to fill an afternoon.

They're an opportunity to experience the landscape and the work behind it from an entirely different perspective.

Food, wine and life in the wild

Days in Grumeti don't have to revolve entirely around game drives.

Singita places food and wine at the heart of the experience, from relaxed meals overlooking the Grumeti River to evenings around the fire beneath the Serengeti sky. Wine experiences are available at properties including Sasakwa and Faru Faru.
